Dinky Bedford Refuse Truck 252

Well in need of restoration, this Bedford Refuse Truck totally scabby and the tipper winder seized, back door missing, very rough condition. The strip down was tricky as I wanted not to destroy the winder mechanism. Without the box being elevated the tabs on the base could not be released and therefore the winder could not be released. However, I did find that the base of the box could be removed and thus access to the tabs on the base. A hook was used to pull the tabs and the winder gear could be wriggled free. The winder gear was then soaked in WD40 for an hour or so and gentle twisting freed up the gear. Never be in a hurry to strip down and never use force on the gears. Gentle persuasion is all that is needed and it is quite rewarding to have it all working again. The radiator/headlamp unit was prized forward to release it. In the meantime, the paint was stripped from the body and chassis and rough spots rubbed down. The tin parts have yet to be cleaned before reassembly. Tips: The basep
late and chassis was drilled and the chassis tapped to take a 4-40 screw rather than reuse the tabs so that it could be taken apart again. The slider bracket was fastened to the body using a 4-40 screw after drilling and tapping the body. This can be easily seen in the picture and needs to be properly finished. The radiator was stuck in place using household goop. The rear door is missing and I am trying to source this, any ideas? All repainted and assembled.

Complete with all parts and unbroken but needed some loving attention. First stage, as always, to strip it down to the component parts. The restore was quite a challenge. There are a few secrets hidden away for anyone tempting to restore this model. The winding mechanism needed some attention, the chassis was bent, the guides for the shutters had to be fitted and gapped to allow the shutters to glide properly. The rear door should have been fitted before the shutter guides. I may include a guide for the winding mechanism restoration at some point. Easy once you have done it once. I chose to give it a different paint job just to make it more distinctive and may add some decals to finish it off.
